In the same occasion, the Cartagena city in Colombia has been chosen as the local of XXI Panamerican Seed Seminar.
GM TESTING
The International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) has just published its fourth proficiency test for specified traits. It was used 696 seed samples with different levels of contamination. The results are getting better, 89% of the samples were reported correctly when the analysis were qualitative, however when the analysis were quantitative the correct determinations percentage was much lower. The next test is under preparation, who wants to participate, please contact ISTA (www.seedtest.org).
NEW PRODUCT
BayerCropScience has added on the market the product CropStar. This product is recommended for pests control that attack maize seeds, roots and seedlings. The insects can reduce the plants number on a cultivated area and the yield potential of the crops, they have underground or superficial habits, so that it´s presence is generally unnoticed by the farmer. The new product of Bayer CropScience has an efficient action. It is absorbed and assimilated more quickly by the plants, giving them more protection time. Seed treatment is an excelent handling alternative to get more vigorous and healthier plants without pests.
INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Brazil has already a certification scheme accredited by OECD, where the company Pioneer registred, in the crop year of 2005/06, more than 4000 ha for certification. Mr. Neumar Francelino, of the ministery, is satisfied with the good results and he's hoping that other firms will become also accredited to use this service and offer high quality seeds to the market.
ROYALTIES COLLECTION
Soybean royalties collection system in Paraguay has providing several successful benefits for all line (network) productive members. This country has more than two milions ha cultived with soybean, being 70% RR cultivars. The royalties charging duty, is done for firms that buy grains and its beneficiaries are the owners of the RR soybean process, research centers, seeds producers and a research fund. The audit firm has also a participation on the process. This system can be considered as one of the best in the world meaning that when people sit togheter, good things come out.
PROTECTING THE RESEARCH
The short term effects of the seed piracy problems are on the vegetal breeding programs. This is the reason why, several countries are working on a strong campaign for the protection of the research. Without new and better cultivars, there are no improvements. There are many demands towards the creation of cultivar, such as a great deal of money and more than a decade of hardwork.
RECOGNITION
Silomax firm, traditionally manufacturer of equipments for seed conditioning plants, after exporting with success its materials to Latin America, is in negociation process to export to Mozambique. The quality of these products allied of its professionalism in delivering and assembling, clearly makes a distinction among this firm and the others. As can be seen, good news also go fast and far.
COATING
First were the horticultural seeds that received a special protection through coating. Afterwards came the coating of soybean seeds, maize and rice seeds. Nowadays, forage seeds also are receiving special coating protection. This tendence is explained due to the larger part of forage seeds being sold with purity reaching close to 100%.
CULTIVAR PROTECTION
The executive director of Oficina Regional de Semillas, in Santa Cruz - Bolivia, Jorge Rosales King, is trying to get agreement in UPOV to allow protect superior materials developed by research firms without a time limit in another countries. Nowadays this time limit is four years, making firms to protects its material only in the country of origin. Therefore the suggestion is that the protection time should become based on the country of origin.
Bt COTTON
For this agricultural year of 2006/07, Brazil has more GM material - Bt cotton. This material has large advantages on the reduced necessity of insecticide applications for cotton farming. Brazil has about one milion hectares of cotton and its production cost is more than one thousand dollars/ha where chemical products apllication is the major cost. The Bt cotton is very important in relation to production costs, management and human safety.
SPECIAL PRODUCT
The soybean cultivar with higher percentage of protein developed by COODETEC, gets US$ 7,00/t (at the Brazilian market) over conventional cultivates. Which means that it will gain US$ 20,00/ ha. We are in a period where the bills have to be worked out in details, in order to increase the gains at a maximum level.
POSITIONING
Syngenta has finished positioning its product Cruiser as bioactivator for soybean crop. This product is indicated for seed treatment, which provides more vigorous and healthier seedlings wich increases produtivity. Many research institutions have participated on this study involving different environment and field conditions.
