ABRASEM
The lack of safety to seed companies that dedicate their work to develop improved materials caused Abrasem (Brazilian Seed Association) to ask for an appointment with the Ministry of Justice. During the appointment, the Ministry expressed his worry about the events, and promised to take proper actions. According to their appointment, one can infer that the matter is a serious one, which requires very energetic actions.
CLARIFICATION
ISF clarifies that according to UPOV's ATA from 1978 or 1991, the plant breeder can make use of protected varieties in its improvement program. That is, he does not need a permission to make use of a protected variety as initial variability source.
CORRECTING THE PATH
In areas where the second maize crop is under low risk, its cultivation already overpasses summer maize cultivation. Such trend is causing the demand for soybeans early cultivars to be high. It means that the improvement programs must pay special attention on that kind of soybeans. Positioning a good variety of early soybeans guarantees its sales, mainly in a moment in which it is hard to produce seeds of such varieties. They get mature during high temperature days and often rainy.
EVOLUTION
Brazil has just adopted the perform based approach system for cotton seeds analysis in order to detect the presence of adventitious seeds. Brazil allows a contamination with OGM as high as 1% for cotton. The accreditation system allows a laboratory to use the determination method that most fits its needs.
UPOV
The number of countries that are becoming engaged to UPOV keeps increasing, being Iceland the last one (61°). Nowadays, the engagement to UPOV is performed by ATA from 1991, in which protection reaches the grain.
SYNGENTA
After two years in a restructuration process, Syngenta Seeds in Brazil starts a new stage. Within such context, Ademir Capelaro, professional in the area with a fruitful trajectory at Braspov's directory, will become the director of Product Research and Development. SEED News wishes him success in this important activity.
AGREEMENT
The Technological Fee (TF) charged by Monsanto in Brazil is being widely discussed, while the main proposal encloses three situations: 1 - to the farmer who does not buy seed, the TF will be X; 2 - to those who buy seed but pay only at harvest time, the TF will be settled as X - 50%; and 3 - to those who buy the seed and pay for it at sight, the TF will be X - 75%. Such ratio benefits the farmer who purchases seeds. Certainly, with this, more investments in research will be allowed so that better varieties can be developed.
RECOGNITION
The Association of Oily Seeds Producers (Anapo), from Bolivia, during its general meeting, awarded the Seeds Regional Council (CRS), from Santa Cruz, the medal of Gran Gold. Such seed council, as a matter of fact, acts in such a way that more than 70% of the soybean seed used by farmers are certified seeds. And at this moment, when GM soybeans faced difficulties to be adopted, CRS has incisively acted on legalizing it, so that today Bolivia has more than 10 RR soybean materials for commercial application. SEED News congratulates CRS, through its CEO, Jorge Rosales K., one of the Council founders.
ASTA I
The American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) was founded in 1883 and currently counts with more than 850 members among seed producers and agents, correspondents, affiliated, and associated individuals. Such organization is very important when we realize that seed business in USA overpasses 6 billion dollars per year. ASTA is known by its commitment with the promotion and development of seed quality and the trade.
ASTA II
The entity has several strong points; however, some of them deserve to be highlighted, such as the number of members per species: for maize seeds there are 228, soybeans 211, alfalfa 178, flowers 90, vegetables 170, and peanuts 5. Other aspect, is the range of varieties per species, which in maize are 6,000 and in forage seeds are 5,500 among which 75 are the most common.
PLANT PROTECTION
The International Seed Federation (ISF), based on the technological developments that can be easily used by plant breeders, considers that fishing for parental lines is neither acceptable nor ethical. Fortunately there are tools to minimize this procedure.
HELP
FAO's help on seed programs in the countries is carrying out through several ways and program's components. It acts on the organization of the production while helping with emergency seeds in which vegetables are ones that receive more attention. Currently, FAO has 80 ongoing projects, involving consultants who are expertise in different knowledge fields.
NEW ORGANIZATION
It was created the Seed Association of the Americas (SAA) to promote the seed trade in the three American region. The founders members are Argentina, Canada, Chile, United States and Uruguay. It is formed practically by the private sector that feels a need for this kind of organization in aregion with some billion dollars seed trade. The SAA has just payed a visit to Abrasem (Brazilian Seed Association) with the objective to join the new association. Carlos Basso from the company Basso Seeds is in front of the organization.
